WINFIELD CITY SCHOOLS
MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION
POLICY AND PROCEDURE

PURPOSE

Because students have increasing health care needs that often require administration of medication during the school day, it is the desire of the Winfield City Schools administrators to provide this service to not only promote optimal health to the student, but a safe environment as well.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS
NO PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION WILL BE GIVEN WITHOUT A WRITTEN ORDER FROM THE PHYSICIAN AND THE PARENT/GUARDIAN.  All prescription medication brought to the school must be current and in a pharmacy-labeled container with the student’s name, physician’s name, name of medication, strength, dosage, time interval, instructions for administration and date of discontinuation, when appropriate.  The pharmacist will provide an extra labeled bottle for school use if asked to do so. Send the amount of medication to be given at school in the pharmacy-labeled bottle along with written permission from the parent and physician. Medications ordered three times a day should be given in the morning before school, after school and at bedtime unless specifically ordered during school hours or with meals.  Any time prescription medications change, a new permission form must be completed from the physician and parent.

NONPRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS (OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS)
Nonprescription (over-the-counter medications –OTC) must be brought to the school in the original container identifying the medication and the manufacturer’s labeling with an expiration date. The student’s name should also be written on the bottle. A small bottle of medication is recommended due to limited space in the school office.

PARENTAL/PHYSICIAN PERMISSION
No medication is given to a child without written permission from a parent/guardian. All prescription medication must also be accompanied by written permission from the physician.  Even if the parent brings the medication to the school, a note should accompany it. Please do not just tell someone in the office about the medicine. That person may not be the one administering the medication.  A note with the medicine will make sure the one giving it will have specific instructions to give it correctly. Please include the child’s name, name of medication and dosage, date and time the medication should be given.

SELF-ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS BY STUDENTS
(ASTHMA INHALERS, EPI-PENS, ETC)

Students who need to keep an inhaler or Epi-pen with them at all times while at school may do so with written permission from the physician and parents. A student may self-administer his/her own medication if the physician and parents indicate on the permission form that he may do so and school officials approve the medication staying with the student instead of the office. Forms are available in the school office.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. All medication is kept and given through the school office (see self-administering medications for exceptions). Students who need any medicine during the school year must bring it to the school office and come there when medication is necessary.
  2. Controlled substances, such as Ritalin and Adderall, must be brought to the school by the parent. The parent should count the number in the presence of school personnel and document correct count on form kept in the office.
  3. The school is not allowed to accept any medication in a zip-lock bag, envelope, tissue, aluminum foil, or any container labeled with anything other than the manufacturer or pharmacy.
  4. Any medication left over at the end of the school year will be discarded.
